1 pound large shrimp, peeled and deveined
The main ingredient for this Crunchy Sweet Blackened Shrimp recipe is 1 pound large shrimp, peeled and deveined. Here are some key details about this crucial component:
Quantity: The recipe requires exactly 1 pound of large shrimp. This amount ensures that the dish has a substantial portion size without overwhelming the palate.
Type of Shrimp: The recipe specifically calls for large shrimp. Large shrimp typically have a shell length of around 15-20 count, with 15 count being the largest and most desirable in this context. They are also usually more succulent and flavorful than smaller varieties.
Preparation: The shrimp should be peeled and deveined. This means that the shells have been removed, leaving just the succulent flesh inside the shrimp. Deveining involves removing the dark vein running along the back of the shrimp, which can be a bit gritty in texture.
Here are some benefits associated with using large shrimp in this recipe:
- Sweet and tender flavor: Large shrimp tend to have a sweeter, more delicate flavor profile than smaller varieties. This enhances the overall taste of the dish.
- Soft texture: Despite their size, large shrimp remain relatively soft in texture. They won’t be tough or rubbery, which can be a problem with some types of shellfish.
Using high-quality ingredients like large shrimp ensures that your Crunchy Sweet Blackened Shrimp Recipe turns out delicious and visually appealing. The combination of their natural sweetness, tender texture, and the flavorful blackening spices will make this dish a standout at any gathering or meal!
1/4 cup blackening seasoning
The key to achieving that signature crispy crust on the shrimp is using the right combination of ingredients, starting with a generous amount of blackening seasoning.
Blackening seasoning is a blend of spices that typically includes a mix of paprika, garlic powder, onion powder, cayenne pepper, thyme, oregano, and other seasonings designed to add depth and heat to your dishes.
The magic happens when you sprinkle 1/4 cup of blackening seasoning evenly over the shrimp before cooking them. This ensures that each bite is loaded with the bold flavors of the seasonings.
You can find blackening seasoning at most grocery stores or online, or make your own by blending together paprika, garlic powder, onion powder, cayenne pepper, thyme, oregano, and any other seasonings you like.
2 tablespoons olive oil
In this recipe for Crunchy Sweet Blackened Shrimp, one key ingredient that plays a significant role is olive oil. Here are some details about it:
Olive oil is a popular cooking oil extracted from olives, which are the fruit of the olive tree (Olea europaea). It’s native to the Mediterranean region and has been used for centuries in various forms of cuisine.
Types of Olive Oil
- Extra Virgin Olive Oil (EVOO): This is the highest quality and most expensive type, obtained from the first pressing of olives. It’s known for its rich flavor and health benefits.
- Pure Olive Oil: A blend of refined olive oil and a small amount of EVOO, making it a more affordable option without sacrificing taste.
- Light or Regular Olive Oil: Refined olive oil with a lighter flavor and lower acidity level, often used for sautéing and baking.
The two tablespoons of olive oil called for in this recipe are likely intended to be Extra Virgin Olive Oil (EVOO), given its robust flavor profile and health benefits that will complement the sweetness and crunchiness of the dish. However, feel free to use any other type of olive oil you have on hand or prefer.
When working with olive oil, it’s essential to note a few things:
- Olive oil can become damaged when heated above its smoke point (420°F/220°C) and may develop off-flavors or even be toxic.
- To preserve the nutritional benefits of olive oil, try to use it in moderation, as excessive consumption might negate any positive effects.
In this specific recipe for Crunchy Sweet Blackened Shrimp, olive oil will add a richness and depth to the dish. The heat from cooking should not exceed 350-400°F (175-200°C) to maintain the quality of the olive oil, so keep an eye on the temperature during cooking.
2 cloves garlic, minced
The ingredients for the Crunchy Sweet Blackened Shrimp Recipe include a variety of components that come together to create a flavorful and savory dish.
For the blackening spice blend, you will need:
- Cayenne pepper: adds a spicy kick to the dish (1/4 teaspoon)
- Paprika: contributes a smoky depth of flavor (1 1/2 teaspoons)
- Garlic powder: enhances the garlic flavor without adding raw garlic texture (1/2 teaspoon)
- Onion powder: adds a savory, slightly sweet flavor (1/2 teaspoon)
- Dried thyme: provides a subtle herbal note (1/4 teaspoon)
For the shrimp marinade:
- Soy sauce: adds depth and umami flavor (2 tablespoons)
- Honey: provides sweetness to balance the savory flavors (1 tablespoon)
- Rice vinegar: contributes a slightly sour taste and helps balance the flavors (1 tablespoon)
And finally, for the dish:
- 2 cloves garlic, minced: adds a pungent flavor to the dish
- 1 pound large shrimp: provides protein and texture to the recipe
- 1/4 cup blackening seasoning mix: the store-bought or homemade spice blend that gives the shrimp its characteristic flavor
- 2 tablespoons butter: adds richness and helps caramelize the sugars in the dish
- Crushed crackers or breadcrumbs: provides a crunchy coating for the shrimp
In this recipe, the minced garlic is an essential component that combines with the other ingredients to create a harmonious balance of flavors. The pungency of the garlic complements the savory notes of the soy sauce, honey, and spices, while its slightly sweet undertones enhance the overall flavor profile.
1 teaspoon paprika
Paprika is a sweet and slightly smoky spice made from ground bell peppers or sweet peppers, which are a type of Capsicum annuum. It is a key ingredient in many cuisines, particularly in Hungarian, Spanish, and South American cooking.
The paprika used in the Crunchy Sweet Blackened Shrimp Recipe is specifically one teaspoon of this versatile spice. This amount may seem small, but it packs a significant flavor punch, especially when combined with other ingredients like garlic powder, onion powder, cayenne pepper, thyme, and oregano.
The sweet paprika adds a depth of flavor to the dish without being overpowering, allowing the natural sweetness of the shrimp to shine through. When cooked with the other spices, it helps create a harmonious balance of flavors that complement the bold, blackened seasonings used on the shrimp.
In terms of nutritional value, paprika is rich in antioxidants and contains vitamins A and C, potassium, and fiber. While one teaspoon may not provide significant amounts of these nutrients, regular consumption as part of a balanced diet can contribute to overall health benefits.
When selecting a paprika for the recipe, look for high-quality, smoked or sweet paprika that is free from additives and fillers. This will ensure the best flavor and aroma in your Crunchy Sweet Blackened Shrimp Recipe.
Remember that paprika can be stored for up to two years in an airtight container, so feel free to buy it in bulk if you plan on using it frequently in your cooking. With its mild, sweet flavor and numerous health benefits, this versatile spice is sure to become a staple in your kitchen!
1/2 teaspoon cayenne pepper (optional)
The ingredients for this Crunchy Sweet Blackened Shrimp recipe include a variety of spices, herbs, and other seasonings that come together to create a deliciously complex flavor profile.
One of the key ingredients in this recipe is 1/2 teaspoon cayenne pepper. This spice is optional, meaning that it can be omitted if desired, but it plays an important role in adding heat to the dish.
Cayenne pepper is a type of powdered red pepper that is made from dried and ground hot peppers. It is a common ingredient in many spicy dishes and is known for its ability to add a intense, fiery flavor.
When used in this recipe, cayenne pepper helps to balance out the sweetness of the brown sugar and the savory flavors of the blackening seasoning. It adds a depth and richness to the dish that would be missing if it were omitted.
It’s worth noting that while cayenne pepper is optional, it can also be adjusted to suit individual tastes. If you prefer a milder flavor, you can start with a smaller amount of cayenne pepper and add more to taste.
The success of a dish like Crunchy Sweet Blackened Shrimp largely depends on the quality and quantity of ingredients used. For this recipe, you will need:
- Protein: 12 large shrimp, peeled and deveined
- Spices: 1 teaspoon paprika, 1/2 teaspoon cayenne pepper, 1/2 teaspoon dried thyme
- Sugar: 1 tablespoon brown sugar
- Salt: 1/4 teaspoon salt
- Flour: 1 cup all-purpose flour for dredging
- Liquids: 2 tablespoons hot sauce, 2 tablespoons olive oil
- Miscellaneous: 1/4 cup panko breadcrumbs, lemon wedges (optional)
The type of shrimp used can also impact the overall flavor and texture. You may use either wild or farmed shrimp, but be sure to choose a variety that is sustainably sourced.
Instructions and Techniques
Cooking the Shrimp
The art of cooking shrimp requires finesse and attention to detail. To achieve a perfect crust on the outside while maintaining a tender and juicy interior, it’s essential to follow specific instructions and techniques. In this article, we’ll delve into the intricacies of cooking blackened shrimp, exploring various methods and tips that will elevate your culinary skills.
First and foremost, selecting the right type of shrimp is crucial. Opt for large, fresh, and deveined shrimp with their shells intact. This will help them hold onto seasonings and flavors better during the cooking process. It’s also important to note that frozen shrimp can work just as well as fresh ones, provided they’re properly thawed before use.
Now, let’s move on to the preparation phase. Rinse the shrimp under cold water to remove any impurities or debris. Pat them dry with a paper towel to ensure even cooking and prevent excess moisture from hindering the browning process.
In a shallow dish, mix together your blackening seasoning blend. This can be made by combining paprika, garlic powder, onion powder, cayenne pepper, thyme, oregano, salt, and black pepper in specific proportions to suit your taste preferences. Some people like their shrimp with a more intense flavor profile, while others prefer a milder one.
Next, add the shrimp to the seasoning mixture and toss them gently to ensure they’re evenly coated. This is where patience comes into play, as allowing the shrimp to sit for about 15 minutes will enable the seasonings to penetrate deeper and develop an incredible aroma.
Heat a skillet over medium-high heat and add a small amount of oil – vegetable or canola work well. Once the oil starts to shimmer and slightly smoke, carefully add the seasoned shrimp in batches if necessary to maintain their individual space. The key is not overcrowding the pan.
Blackening is an art that requires precision and timing. Cook the shrimp for 2-3 minutes on each side, depending on their size. They should transform into a beautiful dark brown crust within this timeframe. Don’t be alarmed if you notice some of them taking longer to turn color – just cook them until they’re golden.
Finally, transfer the cooked blackened shrimp onto a paper-lined plate or tray and let them rest for about 5 minutes before serving. This will allow any excess moisture to dissipate, leaving you with perfectly cooked and textured shrimp that’s simply irresistible. To elevate your dish even further, serve it alongside a flavorful sauce or accompanied by steamed vegetables.

To prepare the Crunchy Sweet Blackened Shrimp Recipe, it’s essential to have a clear understanding of the instructions and techniques involved in achieving this delicious dish.
The first step is to gather all the necessary ingredients, which include shrimp, a mixture of sweet paprika, garlic powder, onion powder, thyme, oregano, cayenne pepper, and salt, as well as some vegetable oil for frying.
The technique of blackening involves a combination of high heat and the Maillard reaction, which is a chemical reaction between amino acids and reducing sugars that occurs when food is cooked. This process creates the characteristic crunchy exterior and sweet flavor of the dish.
To achieve this, you need to heat a skillet or cast-iron pan over high heat until it reaches approximately 450°F (230°C). Then, add the oil and swirl it around to coat the bottom of the pan. Next, add the shrimp and sprinkle the spice mixture evenly over both sides of each shrimp.
The technique of searing is also crucial in this recipe. Searing involves cooking the food quickly over high heat to create a crust on the surface while keeping the interior juicy. This can be achieved by not moving the shrimp for about 2-3 minutes or until they develop a nice brown color.
Avoid overcrowding the pan, as this can cause the shrimp to steam instead of sear. Cook in batches if necessary, and adjust the cooking time accordingly. Once the shrimp are cooked through, remove them from the heat and serve immediately.
This Crunchy Sweet Blackened Shrimp Recipe requires a combination of careful technique, precise measurement of ingredients, and attention to temperature control to achieve the perfect balance of flavors and textures. With practice, you’ll be able to execute this dish with ease and impress your guests with its unique and delicious flavor profile.
Pat dry the shrimp with paper towels to ensure even coating.
The key to achieving a perfect blackening on the shrimp lies in proper preparation, and one crucial step is pat drying the seafood with paper towels to ensure even coating.
This may seem like a simple task, but it’s often overlooked, resulting in a less than desirable outcome. When you pat dry the shrimp, you remove excess moisture from the surface of the meat, creating an ideal environment for the blackening spices to adhere evenly.
Why Pat Dry is Important
- Pat drying removes excess moisture that can prevent the blackening spices from adhering properly, leading to a uneven coating and potentially even steaming instead of searing the shrimp.
- By removing excess moisture, you help the blackening spices penetrate deeper into the meat, resulting in a more intense flavor.
- Pat drying also helps prevent the formation of ice crystals on the surface of the shrimp, which can create an unpleasant texture and affect the overall appearance of the dish.
Techniques for Pat Dry
To pat dry your shrimp effectively, follow these steps:
- Gently remove the shrimp from any marinade or seasonings, taking care not to disturb them further.
- Place a paper towel on a clean surface and lay the shrimp on top of it.
- Pick up the edge of the paper towel closest to the head of the shrimp and gently press down along its length, removing any excess moisture. Repeat this process for each shrimp until they’re all pat dry.
Benefits of Pat Dry
The benefits of properly pat drying your shrimp before blackening them are numerous:
- You’ll achieve a more even and intense flavor, with the blackening spices penetrating deeper into the meat.
- Your shrimp will have a crispy exterior and a tender interior, perfect for a delicious and visually appealing dish.
- The process of pat drying helps remove excess moisture that can affect the overall texture and appearance of your finished product.
