Easy Yet Romantic Filet Mignon

Background and History

Filet mignon, meaning “cute fillet” or “dainty fillet” in French, is a premium cut of beef prized for its tenderness and flavor. This luxurious dish has long been associated with elegance and romance, making it a popular choice for special occasions and intimate dinners.

Ingredients

  • 2 filet mignon steaks, about 1 1/2 inches thick
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil or clarified butter
  • 2 garlic cloves, minced
  • 2 sprigs of fresh rosemary or thyme (optional)
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter
  • 1/4 cup dry red wine (optional)
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Serves: 2 people
Preparation Time: 10 minutes
Cooking Time: 10-15 minutes

Instructions

Season Steaks

Pat the filet mignon steaks dry with paper towels. Season both sides generously with salt and pepper.

Preheat Pan

Heat olive oil or clarified butter in a large skillet over medium-high heat until it begins to shimmer.

Sear Steaks

Carefully place the steaks in the hot skillet and sear for 3-4 minutes on each side for medium-rare, or until desired doneness is achieved. Add minced garlic and fresh herbs to the skillet during the last minute of cooking, if using.

Rest Steaks

Remove the steaks from the skillet and let them rest on a plate tented with foil for 5-10 minutes to allow the juices to redistribute.

Prepare Sauce (Optional)

While the steaks are resting, you can prepare a simple pan sauce. In the same skillet used for cooking the steaks, melt unsalted butter over medium heat. Add dry red wine and simmer until the sauce reduces slightly, about 2-3 minutes. Season with salt and pepper to taste.

Serve

Place the filet mignon steaks on serving plates and drizzle with the prepared pan sauce, if desired. Serve immediately and enjoy your romantic dinner!
