Runza Casserole Recipe

The Runza Casserole is a beloved dish originating from Nebraska, USA, inspired by the traditional handheld pastry known as the runza or bierock, brought by German-Russian immigrants. This hearty casserole captures the essence of the original runza, featuring a savory filling of seasoned ground beef, cabbage, and onions baked inside a golden crust. It has become a staple comfort food, cherished for its satisfying flavors and nostalgic appeal.

  • 1 pound ground beef
  • 1 onion, chopped
  • 4 cups shredded cabbage
  • 2 cans refrigerated crescent roll dough
  • Salt and pepper, to taste
  • Optional: shredded cheese

Serves: 6-8 Time: 1 hour Cooking Time: 30 minutes

Preheat the Oven

Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a 9×13-inch baking dish.

Prepare the Filling

In a large skillet, cook the ground beef and chopped onion over medium heat until the beef is browned and the onion is softened. Add the shredded cabbage to the skillet and cook until wilted. Season with salt and pepper to taste.

Assemble the Casserole

Unroll one can of crescent roll dough and press it into the bottom of the prepared baking dish, covering the bottom completely. Spread the beef and cabbage mixture evenly over the dough. If desired, sprinkle shredded cheese over the filling. Unroll the second can of crescent roll dough and place it over the filling, sealing the edges.

Bake the casserole in the preheated oven for 25-30 minutes, or until the crust is golden brown and cooked through.

Allow the casserole to cool slightly before slicing and serving. Enjoy warm as a comforting meal.
